I take her in the car with me. But the only place I take her inside is Tractor Supply. She’s allowed and we use the dog wash station there. Plus when she goes on car rides I don’t leave her in the car. Usually the drive thru or delivery to the car. She gets a pup cup when we go for a coffee drink. I’d’ never try to take her in Walmart or something like that, she’s not a service dog and I think she would be overwhelmed.
She loves the car rides though.
@tonylegrone@chienfou My previous dog (cattle dog mix) was like that. Super friendly with people, good with cats, goats and poultry, but aggressive around other dogs. My theory was that since we encouraged her to chase coyotes out of the yard (and away from our livestock) she took her job seriously and applied the same behavior to other dogs.
@lisagd22 Oh he’s the sweetest best good boy to people and children. He’s just a maniac to other animals. He was about 8-10 months old when we found him (lost in the woods, not a shelter), which is apparently too late to get them socialized well. We took him to a dog park a few times and he did ok, but we weren’t able to go consistently and he grew out of it quick. We had two cats when we got him and they were his pack and that was it.
Many moons ago I worked retail pharmacy. Drive thru, no worries we had treats that we provided (not the company the employees). Inside people would bring them in anyway. A pharmacy is a medical facility keep your tiny barking machine out. 2x a dog took a in our pharmacy. Who do you think they expected to clean it up? Don’t bring animals of any kind where they do not belong. Stop it.
Good to hear a few of us don’t take our dogs in grocery stores, pharmacies, or other places they really don’t belong. Pet stores, Tractor Supply, etc are fine when they allow it, just please leave them at home when you go to Wally World. Real service dogs are fine but how many times have you seen dogs in shopping carts lately?
@BioBill
Yep. Unfortunately the rise in “support” animals and the restrictions towards asking for documentation about service animal use make it a hard path for many businesses to navigate.
My two dogs just turned 2 this week. The dachshund is a handful and loves everyone. If allowed he’d run to everyone and roll over for belt rubs. The pom is very reserved. I have been taking them with me to run errands lately to get them used to it. I’ve come to really love drive up pickup at the market and Target. Saves me so much time and I can go right after we go for our walks. They love the car but I only allow them inside pet stores. .
@Fuzzalini
Good for you.
Of course, in this day and age, taking your pet “to the store” but not actually bringing them inside while you dash in for something will likely get you an encounter with the local constabulary.
@chienfou Really? The only time I ever do that here is to dash in to a fast food restaurant. My town banned drive-thrus so I will often order something online and then go pick it up and leave the dogs in the car for a minute. The ones I usually do that with have windows so I can even see my dogs while I’m walking in there.
@chienfou@therealjrn San Luis Obispo CA. They started it in 1982, So they really never had them here. I just moved here a year ago, so I find it a little annoying. I sometimes drive 10 mi to go to Morro Bay to walk the dogs, and I almost always drive through somewhere just because I can!
According to NPR, Long Beach, Minneapolis and Fair Haven, New Jersey, also have drive-thru bans. I used to have clients in Long Beach, and I know I’ve driven thru a Jack in the box there. maybe they’re just in limited areas (or they are lying).
@Fuzzalini
I don’t blame you for driving to Morro rock. That’s a cool place! We were there this summer in an RV for a couple of days and thoroughly enjoyed it.
@chienfou Cool! My BF grew up in Morro Bay and wanted to move back here. When we first moved up here from OC, we lived in Morro Bay for a year. It’s lovely but I wanted to move out of a tourist town and be closer to civilization. I work from home but my BF works in SLO, so we moved here almost exactly a year ago and I like it here much more but I still love to go to Morro Bay. As they say, it’s a beautiful place to visit…
@Fuzzalini
We stayed at the dunes RV Park. Had a cousin visiting from France on the trip and she really enjoyed the area. Really like the squirrels at the rock and the seals in the bay.
@chienfou@Fuzzalini Hah, I thought they were here. I was sitting on the grass eating lunch one day and squirrel got up on my shoe. And right after I saw “awwww!” it peed on me.
Before my dog crossed the Rainbow Bridge . She went everywhere with because she was a service dog! She helped me move my wheelchair and open doors! I had to tell people ‘no petting’ the dogs ‘on duty’ ! You wouldn’t pet my cane or wheelchair! I always carry any documentation for the dog in a pocket on the vest. Just in case an incident occurs. Always well groomed and well behaved. I miss the camaraderie of my service dog. Saving up for a new one. Got to start with a pup, so much to teach, habits to instill and bonding! Lots of work but many rewards
@jkawaguchi
Hope you find a new service dog soon. I have absolutely no problem with service dogs. It’s amazing what they can be trained to do. From PTSD, to diabetes, to seizures, to seeing eye dogs and too many more to mention, they are all amazingly well trained and well behaved.
The hazy “support dog” niche on the other hand is a PITA. Too many entitled “Karens” dragging around pocket pups with no manners, no training, and no need to be where they are much of the time.
False. Dogs don’t belong in a lot of places people bring them.
@yakkoTDI
I definitely agree. Unfortunately far too many people don’t!
I love dogs. I’ve many (6) of them my entire life.
#But they are pets, not humans.
And for the love of Buddha, keep them out of grocery stores!!!
@haydesigner Come on, don’t you love stepping around poop while shopping?
Thank you for the ‘no dog’ choice!
@ratman
Finally
My (late) doggie did NOT like going on any trip at all.
bitch is so whiny in the car i dont bring her as many places as i’d like
If Lucky counts (despite being an airwolf), then absolutely yes. Literally everywhere.
Well, I don’t get invited everywhere SHE goes…
@phendrick Oh man, you’ve been missing out on some crazy fun times!
I take her in the car with me. But the only place I take her inside is Tractor Supply. She’s allowed and we use the dog wash station there. @remo28 Same with my late dog. She loved going for rides. It’s got to be boring being home all the time.
My wife’s dog only goes on long trips or to pet friendly houses.
Can’t even bring mine to a dog park because he’ll bite the other dogs. Rescue chow mixes are difficult.
@tonylegrone Funny, my rescue Chow mix was super sweet. I guess it depends on the mix and why they were in the shelter.
@tonylegrone
That’s for sure. Thanks for being responsible enough to realize that though!

When I had a dog I took him everywhere I could. Restaurants were chosen based on how dog friendly they were.
@kittykat9180
I have no real problem with dogs in an outdoor space at a restaurant like a patio or deck. I do however dislike having them inside.
@chienfou I agree. I love dogs, but some places aren’t appropriate for them.
My two dogs just turned 2 this week. The dachshund is a handful and loves everyone. If allowed he’d run to everyone and roll over for belt rubs. The pom is very reserved. @Fuzzalini says “My town banned drive-thrus”
What the what? That’s un-American! Where is this?

@chienfou @Fuzzalini 1982 huh. Interesting. Someone decided it was a quality of life thing, or something.
@Fuzzalini

@chienfou You mean the world’s fattest squirrels with zero fear of humanity?
I’m well acquainted with them!
@Fuzzalini
@chienfou @Fuzzalini Hah, I thought they were here. I was sitting on the grass eating lunch one day and squirrel got up on my shoe. And right after I saw “awwww!” it peed on me.

I pictured you taller…
@chienfou Yeah, I’m the tallest in my family.

Everywhere in my heart; they no longer walk this earth.
